Arburg GmbH + Co. KG, the Germany-based injection molding machine manufacturer, has won a Red Dot design award for its first 3-D printing machine, the Freeformer.

The international award, presented in Essen, Germany, each year celebrates excellence in product and communication design.

The Freeformer, an additive manufacturing machine, uses traditional plastic pellets rather than filament and features a moving print head rather than a moving platen. The judges praised it for its “excellent product design.”

It is the first product by Arburg ever to win a Red Dot Award. Past winners include Apple, Sony and BMW.
