Atkore International Inc. of Harvey, Ill., has acquired PVC conduit maker American Pipe & Plastics Inc. of Kirkwood, N.Y., which serves the telecommunications, cable TV, power and fiber optic infrastructure markets, for an undisclosed sum.
The acquisition strengthens Atkore’s position in the PVC market, according to Bill Waltz, president of Atkore’s plastic pipe and conduit business unit. Atkore’s PVC conduit is used in a wide range of construction, electrical, fire, security, mechanical and automotive applications.
“This acquisition naturally complements our existing PVC product portfolio, expands our market presence in the Northeast, and enhances the total suite of value-added solutions for our electric raceway customers,” Walz said in a news release.
At Atkore, electrical raceway refers to the mechanical infrastructure that deploys and protects electrical circuitry from the curb to the outlet.
Cecile Crammer, the president/CEO of American Pipe & Plastics, will become the vice president of sales for the brand within Atkore. He was with the acquired company, which has about 45 employees, for more than 30 years.
Last fall Atkore also acquired all or most of three other businesses, including Ridgeline Pipe Manufacturing for $38.2 million, Heritage Group for $89.5 million, and Liberty Plastics for $2.5 million. At the time, Atkore officials said their goal was to expand the company’s core capabilities in conduit and become the leader in the PVC industry.
Atkore sold an estimated $120 million of plastic pipe in North America for the fiscal year ending in Sept. 27, 2013, according to Plastics News. Corporate sales were estimated at $1.4 billion for Atkore, which also is a global manufacturer of galvanized steel tubes and pipes, armored wire and cable. The company has 3,300 employees and 36 manufacturing and distribution facilities.
American Pipe and Plastics had estimated sales of $12.5 million for the fiscal year that ended Aug. 13, 2013.
