Toray Plastics (America) Inc. has added a second cogeneration facility at its plant in North Kingstown, R.I.

Toray Plastics (America) Inc. is now operating a second cogeneration system at the company’s campus in Rhode Island.

The $22.7 million system produces electricity and steam for the company’s Torayfan polypropylene film division and steam for the Lumirror polyester film division at the site in North Kingstown, R.I.

Operations began in August, and the system helps the company continue operating during unexpected local power outages. Toray’s first cogeneration system dates back to 2003, the company said.

“We need to continue to be at the cutting edge of new technology. We need to find ways to make new investments that shore up our cost structure, that allow us to expand in a high cost area, and yet still be the lowest cost producer,” CEO Mike Brandmeier said during a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to the company.

Toray Plastics (America) makes polyester, polypropylene, bio-based and metallized films for flexible and rigid packaging, lidding, graphic, industrial, optical and electronic applications, the company said.
